Users Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters
A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People purchasing such drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
